Obituary

Curtis Eugene Lackey, 85, of Sanger, Texas, passed away in Denton on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026. Born on April 19, 1941, in Malvern, Arkansas. Gene is one of three sons of Harry Lackey and Genice (Canada) Lackey.

Gene is a 1958 graduate of Malvern High School. He married Patricia Rose Smith on June 18, 1960. They shared 55 years together, before her passing in 2016, and had three children.

He dedicated 45 years to Acme Brick Company, where he served as Sales Manager and earned numerous awards recognizing his exceptional salesmanship and leadership.

Through church, he met Geneva Kay Elmore, and they married on October 17, 2017. They remained living in Sanger and were members of the First Baptist Church. They each cherished their time together.

A true family man, Gene had a generous heart and treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa.” A devoted Christian, he worked to pass those same values on to his children.

Gene loved the outdoors. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Texas Palomino Exhibitors Association, having raised championship Palomino horses. He enjoyed taking motorcycle trips to Colorado. He also treasured time with friends and was a member of the morning “coffee group” at the Sportsman in Sanger, where fellowship and conversation were part of his daily routine.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Genice Lackey, daughter, Tara Michele Lackey, son, Scott Allen Lackey; and brother, Tom Lackey.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Geneva Lackey of Sanger; one son, Steve Lackey and his wife Christy of Collinsville; one brother, Jim Lackey of Idaho; three grandchildren, Steven Austin Lackey of Marietta, Oklahoma, Daniel Cole Lackey of Pilot Point, and Curtis James Lackey of Springdale, Arkansas; and three great-grandchildren, Willow Lackey, Aspen Lackey, and Wrenly Lackey.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Coker Funeral Home in Sanger, Texas.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Oak Ridge Cemetery, under the direction of J.A. Funk Funeral Home.
