Obituary

James Wallace Chancellor, age 87 of Caney, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at his home. He was born in Caney on October 17, 1935, to the late Wallace Lee Chancellor and Nettie Hall Chancellor.  Reared and receiving his early education in Hot Spring County, he moved to California where he graduated Gardena High School.  While living in California, he joined the National Guard, serving for three years.  He was a master carpenter and architect by trade, teaching the art of carpentry to his sons as they were growing up.  He loved to drive around Hot Spring County and reminisce about houses he built and his family history.  JW was a life-long member of Caney Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and church builder extraordinaire.  He loved his church family and its outreach and service to the Lord.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed golfing and camping.  He was fun-loving, adventurous, enjoyed traveling, and loved spending time with family and friends.  JW always wanted to hear about everyone and what they were up to.  He never met a stranger.

JW is survived by his wife of 65 years, Darlene Kennedy Chancellor, married on July 7, 1957.  He is also survived by his sons, Glen Chancellor and his wife, Cathy of Wylie, Texas, and Don Chancellor and his wife, Kari, of Butterfield; three grandchildren, Melanie Lorraine Gordon, Cole Wesley Chancellor, and Joshua Glen Chancellor; by three great-grandchildren, Kody Sams, Kayden Chancellor, and Carl Gordon, II; and by a sister, Emma Henderson of Friendship. JW had many close and special relationships that meant the world to him.

Mr. Chancellor was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Chancellor.

His funeral will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon, February 23, 2023, at Caney Missionary Baptist Church with Brothers Ralph Ruffin and Pat Greer officiating.  A visitation at the church will begin at twelve-thirty.  Interment will follow in Caney Cemetery under the direction of J. A. Funk Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Cole, Josh, and Kayden Chancellor; Stephen Turner, Brian Harris, and Michael Hodges.

Memorials may be made to Caney Missionary Baptist Church.
