Mr. Leard D. "Lefty" Burks, age 69, of Malvern, died unexpectedly Saturday morning at his residence. He was born on October 25, 1938 in Garland County to the late William Lafayette and Myrtle Green Burks. Reared and educated in Garland County, he was a carpenter by trade. Mr. Burks faithfully attended the Oak Grove Assembly of God Church. He loved to ride motorcycles and was an adept woodworker. He built dollhouses and furniture, and also built doghouses. Mr. Burks was a United States Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Robinson Efird Burks, to whom he was married on December 1, 2007; by a stepson, Mike Greeno and his wife Janice of Malvern; by three brothers, William G. Burks and his wife Violet, Glen Burks and his wife Doris, all of Malvern, and Bo Burks and his wife Martha, of Hot Springs; by one sister, Rita McCaslin of California; a sister-in-law, Linda Burks of Malvern; by two grandsons, Landon and Logan Greeno, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burks was preceded in death by his first wife, Eithel Marie Weurtz Burks; by a brother, Lloyd Burks; and by two sisters, Pauline and Bonnie.

The funeral will be at ten o'clock Wednesday morning, January 9, 2008, at Oak Grove Assembly of God Church with Brothers Robert Davis and Glen McClung officiating. Interment with full military honors by an Honor Guard from the United States Navy and the Thaddeus Carraway VFW Post 2278 of Hot Springs, will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be members of the Honor Guard.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Jim Sutherland, Cecil Weurtz, Dr. Bruce Burton, members of the Benton Oddfellows, and his nephews.

The family will receive friends at J. A. Funk Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from five until seven o'clock.

Memorials are requested to Oak Grove Assembly of God Church, 28856 Hwy 84, Malvern.
