Obituary

Lucile Goodman Mason, age 97 of Malvern, died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at her home. She was born February 26, 1913 in Malvern to the late Conney H. and Rachel Elizabeth Reed Goodman. Lucile graduated from Malvern High School in 1931 and subsequently from the Malvern Business College, beginning her first employment as Society Editor of the Malvern Daily Record from 1933 through 1938. She was married January 1, 1939 to Norman Henry Mason of Hot Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1965. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Hattie Goodman Chamness, Pauline Goodman Jones, Marcile Goodman Reid, and Elizabeth Josephine Goodman, and an infant grandson, Scott Mason McGuyer.

She was a long-time and faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Malvern and a retired secretary-treasurer of the church where she was employed from 1957 through 1985. She was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and many other church committees over the years.

Lucile was an avid family genealogist and spent many hours researching her family history. She was active in community affairs being a member of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Hot Spring County Historical Society, volunteer of the Hot Spring County Medical Center Auxiliary, and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Senior Adult Center until the age of 90.

Her survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Mason McGuyer of Birmingham, Alabama; a son, Norman Henry Mason, Jr. and his wife, Jeanie of Sugar Land, Texas; one granddaughter, Angie Brennan and her husband Terry of Gambrills, Maryland; three grandsons, Dr. Stephen Mason and his wife, Dr. Sharron Mason of Hot Springs, Robert Todd McGuyer and his wife, Monica, and Eric Neal McGuyer and his wife Erin, all of Birmingham; nine great-grandchildren, John Brennan, Paul Brennan, Caroline Brennan, Mason Todd McGuyer, Ashley Taylor McGuyer, Ryne Jeremia McGuyer, Caroline Elizabeth McGuyer, Siobahn Bower, and Amanda Shepherd. She is also survived by a nephew, David and his wife Martha Chamness.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, June 1, 2010, at ten o'clock in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church in Malvern with Reverend LaVon Post and Dr. F. Gladwin Connell officiating. Interment will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Mike Bailey, Tommy Young, Phil Clem, Gail West, John C. Tate, Richard Dejarnatt, Hugh Day Welch, and Bob Rowe.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Rev. Charles G. Ashcraft, Rev. Michael Clayton, Dr. F. Gladwin Connell, Tom and Betty Stalnaker, Ann Exall, Dr. Hershchel J. Wells, Dr. Shawn Purifoy, and the Wesleyan Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends at J. A. Funk Funeral Home on Monday afternoon from five until seven o'clock.

Memorials are requested to First United Methodist Church.
